Fran doesn't want a man.
She's not into women but wants girl friends, but they usually don't believe her or understand.
Fran wants children... badly.
At night she weighs the pros and cons of going way out of her way to raise them alone, or settling for an unwanted marriage before she gets too old.
Cal thinks Fran is selfish. In fact, he told her so.
Cal understands Fran in the way she wishes more women would, but talks to her in a way that only a husband should.
Needless to say, Fran hates Cal.
She's never said it but made sure he got the sentiment, because men like Cal push Fran to her limit.

And Fran can't stand when feelings she doesn't want, from a man she doesn't want, are pressed upon her, and even worse expected to be reciprocated... so she responds by going numb after a short period of being completely exasperated.
There are only two stages when Fran is done, and she's very functional after stage one, but it's not men like Cal who she's really running from.
